From Principles to Practice
It is time to move “From Principles to Practice” in society regarding the governance of emerging autonomous and intelligent systems. The implementation of ethical principles must be validated by dependable applications of A/IS in practice, and here are three ways you can start that process in your life and work:
Ethically Aligned Design, First Edition
The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (The IEEE Global Initiative) has launched Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, First Edition (EAD1e), the most comprehensive, crowd-sourced global treatise regarding the Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems available today.
Download Ethically Aligned Design, First Edition
We released Ethically Aligned Design, Version 1 (EADv1) as a Request for Input in December of 2016 and received over two hundred pages of in-depth feedback about the draft. We subsequently released Ethically Aligned Design, Version 2 (EADv2) in December 2017 and received over three hundred pages of in-depth feedback about the draft. Since that time, over one thousand people from the realms of business, academia and policy helped write, edit, and review Ethically Aligned Design, First Edition.
Now we need more leaders like you to help us move “From Principles to Practice” to prioritize values-driven, ethically aligned design for autonomous and intelligent systems now and in the future.

“As an AI designer and AI ethics advocate at IBM, I’ll be using EAD1e in scaling best practices for thousands of designers and developers. The guidance materials coming out of this will help our teams re-evaluate their current design and development processes. It’s vital to bring in different perspectives whenever we make decisions on what is or isn’t ethical– IEEE’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration makes this work accessible to anyone working with AI.”
“The IEEE is taking a big step forward in marshaling the vast almost half a million strong community in 160 countries of technical professionals to address the topics covered in EAD1e giving groundbreaking and critically needed guidance to its members, AND the corporations and organizations that employ them. In doing so society as a whole benefits – the issues we face on the digital frontier are complex and this publication will trigger much needed public dialogue so all of humanity can begin to face our challenges together.”
“The debate over artificial intelligence systems is at a fever pitch, from corporate board rooms and government offices to research laboratories and manufacturing facilities. What has been missing, until now, is a clear, practical road map to guide the development of AI’s benefits and address its potential risks. Ethically Aligned Design fills that vital gap. It provides businesses, policy makers and everyday people with the essential tools to understand the stakes and support global standards to maximize the benefits and mitigate the risks. Most of all, the IEEE and its diverse pool of experts have produced a call to action that will enable all of us to do a better job of planning for a future that is just beyond the horizon.”
“As a member of the IEEE Ethically Aligned Design [First Edition] Executive Committee, I can attest that this publication is rich in policy, recommendations, and a pointer to the approved IEEE 7000 series standards. It is this intersectionality between technology, social science, law and policy that provides for stimulating reading and a call to action. There are no geographical barriers only opportunities to expand this work further. Congratulations to IEEE and its collaborators for an outstanding First Edition!”
Measuring What Matters in the Era of Global Warming and The Age of Algorithmic Promises, written by Nick Stern, Konstantinos Karachalios and John C. Havens, provides pragmatic and timely recommendations designed to redefine societal prosperity in a more holistic and sustainable way to restore our climate and protect children’s wellbeing.
